Highlights the lack of strikers, doesn't it?

Although wasn't Matt Jarvis top of this list the season before we signed him?

Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
Matt Jarvis was top of the "run to the byline and find the first defender" list.

Pointless stat that means nothing. How do they decide whats a chance and what isnt. We must have created loads of chances away from home because all these chances certainly werent created in our home games,,

Chances creates is generally a pretty good indicator of the quality of a player.

Looking at that list you've got 3 household names in Neymar, Salah and Payet, and 2 unknowns (to me anyway). Both the unknowns are a good age (23 & 26) playing in quality leagues for very average clubs (Montpellier and Freiburg).

We should be all over these sorts of players.

A few on here where arguing that the problem wasn't with the strikers it was with the supply. This was clearly a poor argument compounded by Sakho scoring after about 60 minutes of football.

irons, i havent seen anyone arguing that, there are quite a few that have argued , its actually both and id say theyre probably right. I would love to know what these people that compiled this consider a chance. If its being given the ball within 20 yards of the goal they could be right. I would love to know where all these chances are being created because i havent seen them at the home games.

The GUARDIšŸ’©N trying to get him sold:

Dimitri Payet may be tied to West Ham United until 2021 due to the new deal he signed in February but a move for the playmaker must surely be a big temptation for a Champions League challenging club in the winter transfer window. He was the best performer in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford. This was an exhibition of passing, shooting and dead ball delivery that oozed class, with Payet showing similar style to last seasonā€™s PFA Player of the Year, Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City. The Frenchman earns around Ā£125,000 a week yet this wage and the price of around Ā£40-45m is surely affordable for a Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur to consider making the investment. With this in mind, if West Ham reach 1 February with Payet still at the club they can consider it a success given his top-class quality.

Where are these chances really though, as I don't recall us forcing opposition keepers into an abundance of saves in every game. In fact most of the time we're lucky to get a shot away let alone on target

Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
Yeah the problem is we've got championship quality strikers trying to finish them. He'll be off, probably in the summer, to a club with money and that ls prepared to take progress and European football seriously. Enjoy while it lasts.

Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
I think they define it as a pass that leads to a shot on goal.

So in theory Payet could lay off a simple pass to Antonio 35 yards from goal and Antonio then boots it miles over the bar but that still counts as Payet creating a chance.

On The Ball 2:04 Mon Nov 28
Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
It must count crosses too?

Alex V 2:32 Mon Nov 28
Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
It's any pass that leads directly to a shot. So including crosses and set pieces.

What's the definition of "creating a chance"?

It's up there with "assist" in the spurious statosphere.

>>> What's the definition of "creating a chance"?

As I just said it's any pass leading directly to a shot.

An assist is any pass leading directly to a goal.

Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
Being deliberately pedantic, but many shots have minimal likelihood of going in. Just because player A passed to the shooter player B (it may have been a badly placed pass/the "wrong" pass etc etc) amounts to... not much.

Not saying that's true of Payet, but heavy ingestion of salt is required for such stats.

That young lad for Southampton yesterday: he will have got an "assist" and/or he "created" a chance. The reality? He admitted he fucked up a near open goal and mishit his own shot! Luckily, a man with no knees got his head on the ball for a goal.

Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
And yet I still keep seeing people writing in various crap publications and websites that he's had a 'slow start' to the season or equating part of our problems so far this season to him 'not performing as well as he did last season'.

If we had a striker or two fit and worth the name, he'd be top for assists too - and yet people would still probably ignore that and drool all over the likes of Ozil instead.

I really don't know what more he is supposed to do all on his own.

Alex V 3:29 Mon Nov 28
Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
One thing that does skew it is taking set-pieces. From what I can tell half of Payet's chances created come from that. Of course there's a benefit to having a great set-piece taker.

I think what it underlines is what a free role Payet gets at our club. He has pretty much a free role, he takes all the set-pieces, and when he gets on the ball he can try that killer pass. He could get a big move but he would likely never get that freedom again - not many players do.

Mart O 3:38 Mon Nov 28
Re: Most chances created in Europe ! (Payet)
Yeah well no one's ever had a free role in a team managed by Didier Deschamps and yet Dimi's done pretty well for France.

Unfortunately, therefore, I can't see said freedom convincing him to stay very long at a club that's run like an episode of keystone cops.
